Japanese Art

Featuring a selection of prints from the V&A, RHS and The Courtauld, our Japanese collection is home to charming artworks, including traditional Ukiyo-e.

Translated as ‘pictures of the floating world’, Ukiyo-e offers an ideal of the perfect world, reminiscent of our own, but removed from all flaws. Becoming hugely popular in the Edo period (1615-1868), Ukiyo-e woodblock printing offered an early form of mass production, enabling all sections of the population the ability to own art.

Discover Katsushika Hokusai’s ‘Great Wave of Kanagawa’ alongside works by Utagawa Kunisada, Utagawa Hiroshige, and botanical photography by Ogawa Kazumasa in this captivating collection.
