Translated as ‘pictures of the floating world’, Ukiyo-e offers an ideal of the perfect world, reminiscent of our own, but removed from all flaws. Becoming hugely popular in the Edo period (1615-1868), Ukiyo-e woodblock printing offered an early form of mass production, enabling all sections of the population the ability to own art.
