Our team’s favourite artworks

We’re passionate about the variety of artwork we hold in our collection, there’s truly art for everyone. Our team is no exception when it comes to their dynamic tastes in art. Here’s our latest roundup of our Team Print of the Month series, featuring historic and contemporary pieces, and a little about why our team loves them so much.

Cassette – Ferric

‘I love retro graphic design, and especially that which is inspired by technology. The Cassette prints by Neil Stevens are a superb example – I wish I could have picked them all!’ – Andria, Designer at King & McGaw

Tri (II)

‘This piece by Emma Cousin is titled Tri as a reference to the tri-colour process that’s been used in creating the silkscreen editions. I like the way the work is pairing a metaphorical exploration of the body with an exploration into the qualities of the print medium.

The more I look at Tri, the more questions it raises. I am looking at a group of characters, or I am watching the dance of the same figure, caught striking a pose at different moments in time, like in a Muybridge photographic sequence. Except that here, to me, the conceptual brilliance of Tri also resides in its ability to compress past, present and future times in one single frame.’ – Nils, Art Director at King & McGaw

Fiorucci Jeans

‘My favourite piece from our archive is this rare poster by the Italian fashion label, Fiorucci. It features the brand’s iconic Raphael-inspired cherubs design that was launched in 1973 for Fiorucci Jeans. I love the way they merged art, culture and fashion and the unique history of the brand that rose to fame in New York in the 70’s. They took inspiration from the Studio 54 club scene and their midtown store attracted everyone from Madonna to Andy Warhol.’ – Ella, Museums & Galleries Accounts Manager at King & McGaw

Galerie d’Egmont

‘This beautiful vintage piece is a new favourite of mine. Created for an exhibition by the French ceramic artist Roger Capron, it was printed by hand in 1957 using a combination of printmaking techniques. The image is a linocut and the type is printed by letterpress. I love the richness of the ink achieved by these methods, and the debossed letters in the paper add to its charm. The provenance and character of this piece make it truly special.’ – Angela, Publishing and Product Coordinator at King & McGaw

Statue of Liberty in Paris, 1886

‘I picked this rare poster because it’s so iconic, and it’s something that couldn’t ever be replaced. This photograph captures the Statue of Liberty being assembled for the first time in Paris before it was shipped to America and inaugurated in 1886 – what an amazing thing to capture. It must have been an incredible sight for everybody to see this thing towering above them. The fact that somebody decided it was worthy of having a photograph taken of it, in that situation, they were obviously very proud of it, and rightly so.’ – Mark, Print Specialist at King & McGaw

Blue Bloom

My favourite artworks in our collection are by artist Stephen Doherty. These striking floral prints were inspired by Goa’s monsoon season when Doherty was an artist in residence with Aamir Art House in 2018. He said of the works ‘My focus is on the flower as a celebration of nature; the power behind its softness, and the pulsing rhythm of the bloom’.

What I love most about the prints are the colours and the softness of the layers of inks used, depicting the fragility of nature. Each petal looks as delicate as the wings of a butterfly. I find it hard to choose between the different colour ways, some days I’m more drawn to the Blue Bloom, other days it’s Fading Pink or the Red Anemone. Each print has been hand signed by the artist and comes with a certificate of authenticity. – Natalie, Social Media Manager at King & McGaw
