Girl with a White Dog, 1951-1952

Lucian Freud (8 December 1922 – 20 July 2011) was a British painter and draughtsman, who specialised in figurative art. Known as one of the foremost 20th-century English portraitists, his works are mostly of friends and family in arresting, sometimes discomforting poses.

Born in Berlin, Freud moved with his family to England in 1933 when he was 10 years old to escape the rise of Nazism, and become a British naturalised citizen in 1939. Freud was the grandson of the neurologist Sigmund Freud.
